There are many reasons to install a wood fence in or around your yard. Whether your fence is for privacy, beauty, or corralling playful kids and pets, there are a few things you’ll need to understand about tackling a wood fence installation before starting. Here’s what you can expect to discuss with a fencing pro near you.

1. When do you need this project completed?

Establishing a timeline with your fence contractor is the first step when considering a fence installation project. Depending on the climate in your area, the first thing to know is which season is best for accomplishing the task. In cold climates, winter work isn't often possible.

Second, your contractor must submit plans to obtain the building permit. This can include performing a land survey to identify the legal boundaries of your yard and creating drawings of the project. The process can take up to a month to complete. Making a plan and timeline with your contractor is key to getting the project off on the right foot.

2. What is the purpose of the fence?

Wood fences are available in many forms for many reasons. Discuss with your contractor the reason you wish to build the structure. Are you considering installing a fence for privacy, landscape beautification, or containing pets or kids? Each type of fence can serve specific functions, and some, like privacy fences, can meet multiple needs.

3. How tall should the fence be?

Municipalities set rules for fence heights. Often, the height of a privacy fence is limited to six feet tall in the backyard and four feet tall in the front yard. However, these measurements vary by location and fence type. If your fence will contain pets, it's also essential to determine what height is necessary to keep them from jumping over it.

4. What type of fencing material do you want to install?

Wood fences are available in multiple species and even in different materials. If you enjoy the look of a wood fence but would rather not deal with the maintenance requirements, composites, vinyl, and other wood-imitating materials are also available. Discuss the maintenance needs of wood fencing with your contractor and decide if faux material is also an option that could fit your needs and budget.

5. What is your budget?

Because wood fences are available in such a wide variety of styles, types, and price points, the cost to install a wood fence varies. Discussing your overall budget early in the planning stages of your project will not only speed up the process but open the dialogue for money-saving or enhancement options.

6. Are there any additional features you want to install with the fence?

Many homeowners who add fences to their yards also consider upgrading or updating their landscaping at the same time. If this is part of your plan, discuss landscaping ideas with your fence contractor and a landscaper to ensure seamless coordination between the two projects.
