The years 2020 through 2022 saw a significant shift in American culture, with more residents spending time at home than ever. The number of private swimming pools being built followed suit, with many states seeing double, triple, and even quadruple the growth in previous years. With all the talk of pools and the increase in pool installation, it’s worth noting that there are key safety points to remember when having fun in the sun. Pools bring about a new safety hazard for children and pets, so you’ll need to install additional features to keep everyone safe.
In some states like Florida and Arizona, homeowners are required to install a pool fence. This type of fencing goes around the outside of your pool, has a door that locks, and prevents unwanted guests or small children and animals from entering the pool area. Even if your state laws don't require a pool fence, most homeowner’s insurance policies require some type of fencing around a pool for liability purposes.
Perhaps the best time to install a pool fence is when installing the pool itself, especially if it’s mandatory where you live. The cost to install a pool fence is between $15 and $25 per linear foot, depending on the fence material.
Beyond installing a fence to keep children out of the pool when unattended, you can install other features, like pool alarms, to keep your backyard oasis safe. It’s also important to teach pool users basic safety guidelines. For example, running around an inground pool can lead to slips and falls, and in the worst case, can lead to a fall into the pool. It’s also essential that everyone swimming in your pool knows not to dive into the shallow end or in the case of an above-ground pool, not to dive at all.
Creating a plan for the pool will help keep things fun, exciting, and safe. A new pool is an investment, and you want to be able to enjoy it for years to come.
