Basements have a reputation for being dusty, dingy, dungeon-like rooms that don’t serve much of a purpose beyond giving you the creeps. But in reality, basements are handy storage spaces that can double as an extra living space, home office, play room, etc. Follow this basement cleaning and organizing checklist to keep yours in tip top shape.

Basement Cleaning Checklist

Whether finishing your basement is a far-off fantasy or it’s already fully finished, it’s likely where most of your home storage lives. Basements are ideal places to keep things that you only occasionally need access to, like holiday decorations and old paperwork that might be important someday (but not today).

That said, basements can get cluttered quickly. Here’s some weekly, monthly, and yearly cleaning tasks to do to stay on top of your basement’s overall cleanliness.

Weekly

When the weekend rolls around and you finally have time to spruce up the house, don’t forget the basement. Tidying it up each week will keep it looking neat and orderly at all times.

Tasks to take care of on a weekly basis include:

  • Throw away trash

  • Put away items that don’t belong (toys, stray cups, etc.)

  • Dust and wipe down surfaces

  • Mop, sweep, and/or vacuum (depending on the surface)

Monthly Basement Cleaning Tasks

Once in a while, basements need more than just tidying up. Each month (or sooner if you notice it’s needed), do a load of laundry to wash your window treatments and other textiles you have in your basement. If yours doubles as a living space, that might include rugs and couch covers.

Each month, tackle these basement cleaning tasks:

  • Wash curtains and other textiles

  • Wash windows inside and out

  • Clean/wipe down furniture

  • Wipe down vents

  • Clean blinds if you have them

Yearly Basement Cleaning Tasks

While you should complete some cleaning tasks on a regular basis to keep your basement sparkling, some are only needed on occasion. You can hold off on these particular jobs until your yearly spring cleaning itch hits:

Basement Organization

Basements are excellent storage spaces that can collect an overwhelming amount of clutter over time. Organizing your basement is the best way to prevent clutter from piling up in the first place. Plan to declutter and reorganize your basement entirely once a year. Decluttering as you go (like tossing old, broken tree ornaments as you’re putting the holiday decorations away) will make this yearly project much more manageable.

Organize your basement to keep everything in check and cut down on clutter. Here’s what to do:

  • Declutter

  • Pare down

  • Take inventory

  • Box things up and organize

Declutter

Go through your basement armed with gloves and a trash bag. Toss trash and remove everything else so that you can sort through it.

Pare Down

Sort things into three separate piles—to trash, to keep, to donate. Donate things you no longer need, like your kids’ ill-fitting winter coats. Keeping only the bare minimum will mean you have less to store and keep organized, making your job easier. Of course, keep anything sentimental, valuable, or particularly useful and find a place for them.

Take Inventory

Take out a pen and a piece of paper and make a list of everything you have stored in your basement, from office supplies to spare furniture. Whether you’re a visual learner or not, this inventory list will help you keep track of the things that go in and out of your basement.

When you go to reorganize the basement each year, you can pull out your list to see what you have. Update it as needed and be mindful of how long the list is.

Box Things Up and Organize

Once you’ve decluttered and purged the items you no longer need, you’ll be left with your must-have items. Instead of chucking them into boxes and setting them on storage shelves in an unpredictable order, consider implementing a simple organization system.

Place smaller items into boxes, label the box so that it shows what’s inside, and store like items together. All of the seasonal decorations can go on one shelf, while the camping gear can go on another. The more organized your basement is, the less reorganizing you’ll need to do in the future. A yearly basement organization checkup, whether you need to fully reorganize or not, will keep your space in check.

If organization isn’t your strong suit, consider hiring a professional organizer to help you through the process. They will have all the tools, skills, and knowledge necessary to get your basement organized.
