If you’re installing an aluminum or steel fence to add more security and curb appeal to your property, it’s important to know what to ask your fence contractor before you get started. Understanding the pros and cons, the timeline, size needs, and your budget can lead to a more positive experience.

1. What are the pros and cons of an aluminum or steel fence?

Aluminum fencing is durable and lightweight and costs slightly less than a steel fence. It resists corrosion and is low-maintenance, but it’s not as strong as a steel fence. There are also lots of powder coating options for a more customized look.

A steel fence, while more expensive than an aluminum fence, offers a high-end look. Steel fences are often welded, adding strength to an already sturdy material.

2. When do you need this project completed?

Steel and aluminum fencing usually takes a few days to install when done by a qualified local fence contractor. Even though the installation window isn’t very big, it’s important to discuss your timeline with your contractor, so they can schedule their time accurately. It’s also important to leave some flexibility in case the weather doesn’t cooperate.

3. How large is the area you’re fencing?

Fencing is measured in linear feet, so the larger the area you’re fencing, the more it will cost. Aluminum fencing costs between $7 and $32 per linear foot for the materials alone. That number increases to $22 and $72 per linear foot with labor.

Steel fencing costs between $20 and $70 per linear foot, depending on the type you choose. Corrugated is the most affordable, while picket and privacy steel fencing can be on the higher end.

4. How tall should the fence be?

Aluminum and steel fences can be as low as 3 feet and as high as 6 feet or higher, depending on your needs. Taller fences will naturally cost more because the additional height requires more material. The height may also impact other aspects, like the cost of labor to install it.

5. What kind of gate do you need?

You’ll need to install at least one gate along with your fence, and the style of gate you choose will impact the cost. Security gates, for instance, can cost $3,000 or more, while a simple walk-in gate may only cost $200

6. What is your budget?

Aluminum fencing and steel fencing are pretty comparable in cost, with the former costing an average of $4,500 and the latter costing an average of $5,100. The actual cost will depend on other factors, such as where you purchase the materials, the type of gate you choose, labor costs, and any extras like powder coating or a security gate.
